Back From The Castle

You might remember that last week, we were heading south to the Magic Castle's Swap Meet. It was quite a weekend! We arrived Friday afternoon to meet up with Chuck and Gerald Kirchner from Magic City, Inc., Robert Baxt, and Jay Leslie. We all met at Musso and Frank's, our favorite place for lunch that has become a tradition. Afterwards, it was back to the hotel to talk about magic and the business. Before you knew it, it was time to go to the Magic Castle for dinner and entertainment. Betty and I met up again with Chuck along with Mark and Nani Wilson and had a great dinner. Mark had just returned from a trip to Japan and shared stories of his travels and his son, Greg's new show there. Then it was time to head into the Palace of Mystery. Afterwards, it was downstairs to the Inner Circle Bar where I met up with good friend, Glenn Farrington, who wowed the crowd with his incredible close-up magic. Late now, and it was time to head back to the hotel to get some rest before the Swap Meet Saturday morning.

At 8:00 AM, Robert Baxt called me to ask if I would help him set up his table for the Swap Meet, which I was more than happy to do. I felt that this would be a very busy Swap Meet due to the fact that tables were already sold out weeks in advance. Boy, was I correct! The place was swamped! More sellers than I had ever seen and more rare and unique items, so off I went on a spree! I bought Harry Anderson's Sword Through Neck, vintage Warner, Abbott's, Magic Hands pieces and more! One of the biggest items I brought back was a Rice, Checkers, and Globe built by John Gaughan for Peter Reveen's illusion show that traveled the globe back in the early 1980s! Still in magnificent condition, I was thrilled to be able to acquire this. I have not yet decided whether I will part with this or not as it is such an important piece of magic history. After several hours, it was time to pack up the car and head home. Fortunately for me, my good friends, Frank Thurston and Jay Leslie, helped me gather up all my findings and pack up the car. This was where the real magic came in; my car was literally packed top to bottom, side to side with not an inch to spare, but we got it all in there. After packing the car, my wife wanted to go to Sprinkles Cupcakes. If you haven't heard of Sprinkles Cupcakes, you've not lived until you've tried one. Overhearing our conversation, Frank Thurston said that he was going there as well, so off we went on a cupcake caravan. Located about 5 miles away from the Castle in Beverly Hills, it was nice to sit back and relax before the long drive home. We waited in line, which I hear at times is out the door and around the block, and bought our cupcakes. Back in the car and homeward bound. It was a great weekend, and I can't wait until the next Swap Meet in the Fall.

There are so many great performers that I have admired over the years and looked up to and been inspired by. Many of them I've talked about here before. One of the greatest and original magic acts I've ever had the pleasure of seeing was Marvyn and Carol Roy's Mr. Electric act. Sadly, one half of that dynamic duo passed away earlier this week: Carol Roy. Carol was always so full of energy and one of the nicest, most genuine people you could ever meet. I remember reading her column "It Ain't All Glamor" in Genii magazine and laughing out loud at some of the behind-the-scenes shenanigans she wrote about regarding Marvyn's and her travels. She was the consummate performer, vivacious, beautiful, and how she squeezed into that jumbo light bulb, I'll never know. They both shared a love for magic and each other. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Marvyn and their children in this most difficult time. Thanks, Carol -- you were the real electricity in Mr. Electric's act.

A Big Thanks

I want to say a big thank you to all of you who participated in our recent private collection/estate event. To say it was a success is an understatement; so many of you took advantage of some of the great bargains and rare finds we had to offer. It was really a lot of fun going through all these items, some new, some old, some rare, and some I've never seen before. Over 80% of the first list sold out in 48 hours! Even after the banner was removed from the front page, calls still kept coming in with inquiries about the listed items. Some items were still available, but many I'm sorry to say were already sold. So, thank you to everyone who participated, and we're in active preparation for list #2! As we get close to its release, I'll announce it here. It's a short blog today; Mike and I have been feverishly working over the last couple of months, along with our good friend, Steve Dick, to compile the biggest private estate and collectible event we've ever offered! There are over 1000 items, from small pocket tricks to large scale illusions (some item's I've never even seen in the 40 years I've been into magic) that will be featured in this list. Never Judge A Book

How many times have we heard the old saying "Never judge a book by its cover?" It's an old saying, but it's one that constantly rings true. We are all guilty of it. There is not a person alive who isn't guilty of it. Whether it be about a person, a place, etc., we make snap judgments without truly giving them a chance.

This week, every major news channel, radio station, and almost every newspaper carried the story of Susan Boyle who tried out for Britain's Got Talent. Even before she stepped out onstage, this 48 year-old, single woman, who had never been married or even kissed, as she admitted, began to receive snickers, dirty looks, rolling eyes, and giggles from the audience and her fellow competitors. Stepping onstage, the judges' reactions were obviously preconceived as well. They halfheartedly interviewed her and, as the cameras panned the audience before Boyle began to sing, the laughs and looks continued. Ah, but wait; the music started and what followed was completely unexpected and angelic. What an inspiration this woman is, and more importantly, what a message she has sent across the globe. Hooray for you, Susan Boyle, for teaching us all a very important message and one that won't soon be forgotten. We can all learn to be a little more tolerant, and a little less judgmental in the way we treat one another.

In the rare case you've not gotten a chance to witness this incredible performance viewed over 20 million times in the past 3 days, I've included a video clip below for you to watch again and again and again.

Fond Memories of an Afternoon of Allakazam

They came, they saw, and they learned magic. That pretty much sums up what happened here last Saturday here at Hocus Pocus during our Afternoon of Allakazam event! Mark, Nani, and good friend, Mark Nelson arrived last Friday evening, and we had an amazing barbecue and a great time reminiscing and sharing stories about magic, magicians, and their travels. Saturday morning, I picked up Nani at the hotel and brought her to Hocus Pocus where she set up for the day's activities. Around 12:00, our guests began to arrive, and there was a real buzz in the air in anticipation for what was about to happen! At 1:00 sharp, to an audience of 105 people, I introduced Mark Wilson. For the first hour, the afternoon began with a video presentation of Mark and Nani's career and some of their accomplishments in magic. Mark shared stories and his experiences about how it all began, how he met Nani Darnell, and getting their television show on the air. Before you knew it, the first hour was finished and it was time for a short break.

After the break, it was time to begin Magic University! For the next 2 hours, Mark performed and then expertly taught each trick in detail, supplying all the necessary props to do so for each student in attendance. There were tricks with corks, ropes, napkins, playing cards, money, and a special bonus effect where a borrowed bill with a torn corner ended up inside a Chapstick tube held by another spectator across the room! As an added bonus, Mark and Nani performed the Allakazam Egg and for the finale, Nani even coaxed him into performing his famous Color Changing Knife routine!

I've had so many positive emails and phone calls about this event. The most incredible part is the mix of people who attended; there were men, women, grandparents with grandchildren, teenagers, and every single person in the room was spellbound throughout the day. Everyone, and I do mean everyone, walked away with special memories and the new found abilities to perform every single magic trick they were taught that day. It was truly magical to bring a bunch of strangers together for several hours in an afternoon and and watch them become part of a small family together as they learned and watched together. And I must mention that Mark is still the grandmaster of magic, performing each effect flawlessly and teaching in great detail, so that no one felt left out.

This afternoon's event is proof that Mark and Nani's creation of the new Magic University program is an important and significant contribution to the art of magic! Ready for Allakazam

105 chairs all set up!

The stage is set, the chairs are in place, and we're just 24 hours away from our Afternoon of Allakazam. Mark and Nani Wilson, along with the Magic Castle's own Mark Nelson will be here later this afternoon, and we will all head over to my house this evening for barbecue and prepare for tomorrow's event. Then, tomorrow, 105 lucky people will be able to spend 3 unforgettable hours with the legends of magic, Mark and Nani! The first hour will be a retrospect of their glorious career. The final two hours will be spent with a performance my Mark and Nani and then a teach-in session. We're very excited about this event (I think I'm more excited than anybody) and hope that you are lucky enough to be able to attend.

Lights, Candles, Action!

A couple of weeks ago, my good friend, Paul Romhany, contacted me regarding a magician he had met in Canada named Zoran Krezic. Paul was excited about a magic effect that Zoran had created. Wanting to get his product on the market, Paul immediately suggested he contact us, which he did by phone. I was surprised when Zoran told me that, rather than send pictures or even a video demo, he wanted to show it to me personally. Imagine believing in a product so strongly, Zoran was willing to drive 2.5 days from his home in Vancouver, BC all the way to Fresno, California! That's exactly what he did. Monday morning, bright and early, Zoran, his wife Zdravka, and son Tony arrived here at Hocus Pocus. Within minutes, Zoran was set up to perform his Lit Candles Mystery:

No one saw the finale coming!

Everyone on hand gathered around the stage to watch Zoran perform this miracle. Everyone, including Mike and myself were completely fooled. So much so that Mike didn't even want to know how it was done! I must say that I see hundreds if not thousand of magic products come through these doors every year, but I have not seen anything of this caliber, quality, craftsmanship, and uniqueness in the last 20 or so years. Zoran is not only a master award-winning magician, but he is also a master craftsman the likes we haven't seen for a long time. While this is not an inexpensive prop or one that is suitable for every single performer out there, I urge you to take a few minutes and watch the online video right here!

My only regret is that I can't show you how it's done or the fine machining and craftsmanship along with all the steps Zoran has thought out with this incredible effect. We enjoyed our visit with Zoran and his family. Nicer and down-to-Earth people like them are a rarity in this day and age. I look forward to this new relationship with Zoran and his family, and I'm excited and honored that he chose Hocus Pocus to be the exclusive dealer to carry the Lit Candles Mystery. And just a tip: he's already told me about the next effect that he'll be releasing soon. I can't wait!

If you haven't seen Bruce before, you are truly missing out on one of the most practical performers out there. On the home front, our oldest son, Cole, just called to inform us that he has just gotten a job working for an accounting firm. This was quite a long process as the firm was narrowing down the prospective employees. It went from 40 applicants to 20 to 10 to 5 to 4, and then Cole! We're very excited and proud, so Betty and I will be leaving tomorrow morning to visit Cole and celebrate his success.

That's what everyone has here at Hocus Pocus! Not really. Tarantula is the magic word around here. Ever since we announced the pre-orders for this brand new effect, the orders have been pouring in! All Magic, All The Time!

Kozmo

All Magic, All The Time! That's our motto here at Hocus Pocus. The week started off with a bang with the Kozmo lecture on Monday with a record attendance of 65 local magicians. Kozmo is a seasoned street/close-up performer and also the creator and distributor of Reel Magic Quarterly. His lecture began as a show that you would see him perform on the streets. Rather than having everyone seated, he had them stand around as they would in that venue. This created a unique atmosphere as he performed his best material for a solid 25 minutes. After the performance, everyone took their seats as he described in detail and taught what they had just seen. Everyone had a great time, and I urge you to see Kozmo if you have the opportunity; you won't be disappointed. Not only is he a great performer, both he and his wife are terrific people.

Hildevert comes to the USA to visit Hocus Pocus

We've had several out-of-town visitors this week at Hocus Pocus, from England to the Caribbean. I love when we get visitors, especially visitors from exotic places and other countries. So it was a great surprise to meet and spend time with one of our customers from the Caribbean, Hildevert Lorsold. Imagine our surprise when a taxi cab pulled up this morning and a very tall and exotic-spoken Hildevert stepped out, walked inside, and introduced himself. Talk about long distance! He spent most of his day with us, marveling at both the showroom and warehouse. Of course, he left here with several boxes filled with Hocus Pocus goodies that he'll be taking back home with him next week. Remember, if you are ever in our area, no matter what part of the world you are from, we would love to meet you!

True Astonishment

The True Astonishment Project finally arrived Tuesday morning with a vengeance! The most anticipated and talked-about project that we began taking pre-orders for in December finally became a reality. Having just taken shy of 200 pre-orders, we certainly had our work cut out for us. Everyone was here helping out, including my son, Cole. We flipped it into high gear and got every single order out before 4:00 PM Tuesday afternoon. By now, I'm sure most of you received yours and are undoubtedly enjoying it. On the home front, my son, Cole, just returned from his month-long trip to Italy and France and celebrated his 21st birthday! He'll be here for the rest of this week until he returns to school to start his new semester. My daughter, Renee and new son in-law, Jonathan, are away on their honeymoon and will return tomorrow, so all is well here.

You might remember a few weeks ago, I told you about a top-secret project that Mark, Nani Wilson, and I were working on. Mark cleverly kept me in the dark for a while until just last week. This is a project he has worked tirelessly on for the last year and a half! He and Nani came to Fresno last Thursday and Friday and spent time going over the details of what I believe will be the first of its kind ever offered to the magic community. This is an exciting project of which I will be revealing all the details very soon! I promise.

While they were here, they presented Betty and I with several gifts, but the one I will cherish the most is this original Mark Wilson Magic Set that was sold in various stores in 1954, an entire year before I was born! Another interesting fact that Nani shared with us, is that they hand assembled each one of these magic kits and one of their helpers was a very young John Gaughan -- the very same John Gaughan who builds illusions for magicians all over the world!

So those 2 days they were here were filled with much excitement, anticipation, and promise over this new project. Betty and I will be working closely with Mark and Nani finalizing all the details. One Proud Dad

Wow. Talk about being a proud dad! Last weekend was my daughter, Renee's wedding. Now I must tell you that most fathers, including myself, selfishly believe that no one is capable of taking better care protecting their daughters. That's until we met Jonathan, our new son in-law. From the first day we met Jonathan, we knew there was something special about him, and I have no doubt that he will take good care of my daughter.

Friday afternoon, we all met for the rehearsal, and afterwards we went out to dinner with the entire wedding party, of course. We all had a great time telling stories and enjoying each others' company and talking about the wedding, which was less than 24 hours away...

Friday night, I had a hard time falling asleep. In fact, at 3:45 AM, I awoke and couldn't fall back asleep, so as hard as I tried, no dice. Time to get up and start getting ready for the big day. Around noon, I put on my tuxedo and Betty and I left the house with our son, Max, who was also in the wedding. When we arrived, I could not believe how beautiful my daughter looked. So excited and happy was she that a glow radiated.

I hope you can tell by the few photos what a great time everyone had. For a father to see his daughter so happy celebrating one of the most special days of her life is an experience that I'll never forget. The look on her face all day and all night long was one of pure joy and happiness. Being able to share it with all our close family and friends made it all the more special. It's really cool to be the father of the bride. The honeymoon will begin Monday when they head for the Monterey Coast, and they will spend the entire week there.

On a personal note, I really want to thank all of you who sent emails and phone calls of congratulations for this special day. You are like an extended part of my family, and it's a real pleasure for me to share this special day with you here.

Today's blog is very short; my oldest daughter, Renee, is getting married tomorrow. It seems like only yesterday that she was born. Where has the time gone? It reminds me to make the most of every day, because time sure has a habit of speeding up the older you get. So today, I'm off to do my Father of the Bride last-minute duties: pick up the tuxedos and on to the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner tonight.

I'm sure I'll have plenty to report, along with photos next week.

Mark Wilson's On The Phone

Never in my wildest dreams would I ever have thought I would hear those words: "Paul, Mark Wilson is on the phone." Imagine how great it is to have your idol call you on the telephone and want to speak to you personally! Almost every day, I get to talk to Nani and Mark. Who would have thought? Because of our great friendship, several products have been introduced to the magic market. The first was the Limited Edition Allakazam Hat, which sold out almost immediately. So successful was our first venture together, both Mark and Nani were willing to let me twist their arm and produce Mark's version of the Sucker Silk to Egg, the Allakazam Egg. The sales of this effect have soared which led to our third offering, the Sorcerer's Apprentice Magic Kit. It's been exciting and rewarding to see the tremendous response to each one of these products.

And so, with all this in mind, Mark called me yesterday to tell me that he has yet another project in the works that he wishes to share with Hocus Pocus. He did everything but tip what it was, and I have to say, I am on the edge of my seat! So big is the project that, rather than discuss it with me over the phone, both he and Nani will be making a special trip from their Los Angeles home to Fresno on Thursday, the 29th of January. They will be here for 2 days to discuss the project. Now, Mark knows just how to get to me; no matter how much I asked for more details, he told me I'd just have to be patient and wait until he gets here. I feel like a little kid again, waiting for next Saturday's Magic Land of Allakazam to air. So, for now I'll have to be patient, as hard as that is for me to do, and I know I'll be talking to him several times before then, and I'll try to wriggle out as much information as I can. But, I know Mark -- he'll keep me on pins and needles until the 29th. You can bet one thing: once I know, you'll all know too!

On the home front, I just heard from my son, Cole, who is now in Rome until the end of the week, he got to see the Sistine Chapel, and their hoping to see the Pope this weekend. The beginning of next week, he'll leave Italy bound for Paris, France, where he'll stay until the end of the month.

We're now just one week away from my daughter, Renee's wedding to Jonathan. Everything is set and ready to go. Now all we need to do is throw caution to the wind and hope that this is the best wedding on earth. I'm sure I won't be disappointed...

So, until next week, I'll try to be patient, waiting for news from the Magic Land of Allakazam, and you can bet I'll keep you posted.

A Brand New Year

Well, I did it. I actually took last week off, and it was great. Got a chance to catch up on my sleep, saw a few movies, and basically did what I wanted to and when I wanted to. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect week off. I will admit that coming to work on Monday was a bit of a challenge. It was like I was out of sync. By the end of the day, though, I was back in full swing. So many of you sent us Christmas cards and New Year's greetings and well-wishes, and I just want to say how much I appreciate your thoughtfulness.

On New Year's Day, my son, Cole and 18 other students from his college embarked on a 1 month overseas Jan term. He left from San Francisco at 2:00 PM Thursday afternoon and landed in Italy 3:00 PM Friday. While there, they will be studying art and architecture for approximately 2 1/2 weeks and then on to Paris they will go. He will return the first part of February, just in time to celebrate his 21st birthday!

In 2 weeks, on the 24th of January, my oldest daughter, Renee, will be getting married. I must tell you that this is a little hard for me to believe. It doesn't seem like it was that long ago that I was holding her in my arms as a baby. Both Betty and I are very excited for her, and we could not be happier about our future son in-law; he is very kind and truly a great guy. I know they'll be very happy together. I'll keep you updated on the wedding plans, and of course I'll have plenty of wedding photos to share with you afterwards.

Here at Hocus Pocus, we've been so busy, it's like Christmas is still just around the corner. Lots of new items and even some hard-to-find antiques and collectibles have been hitting the door daily.

One project we're really excited about is from our good friend, and in my opinion, one of magic's biggest best-kept secrets, Michael Boden. Happy New Year!

First of all, I hope all of you had a great Christmas. Hard to believe it's already been a week since the celebration. We all had a great time with friends and family. On Christmas Eve, we spent part of the day at my mother in-law's house and then later in the evening, we headed over to my cousin Karen's house to cap off the evening. Christmas morning, Betty and I prepared for our celebration. This year, we spent Christmas day at home with all our kids. We had a great Christmas dinner, watched old movies, and reminisced about past Christmases. Before you knew it, the day was gone and it was time to go to bed to get up early for all those after-Christmas sales.

I arrived here the day after Christmas promptly at 5:00 AM, and it was like the day after Thanksgiving all over again. The phones were ringing off the hook, orders were coming in online, and we have all of you to thank! So, as I sit here today, on the eve of New Year's Eve, and I reminisce about all that's happened here this year, I think it's been pretty amazing. So much has happened this year: so much good and a few not-so-good, but that's OK. I feel pretty fortunate to be able to do what I truly enjoy every single day. So many of you have been with us since the first days of Hocus Pocus, and some of you have just climbed aboard the Hocus Pocus Express. The bottom line is: you are responsible for the continued success and growth of our business. Your support, suggestions, and viewpoints mean everything to us. We have never lost focus of that, especially in today's society of the rapidly-diminishing notion of customer service. So, for that, I sincerely thank you.

For the first time, I'm going to actually take tomorrow off and not return until next Monday. I say this every year but never do it. I'll sleep in a little bit, catch up on some movies that Betty and I want to see, and spend our New Year's quietly at home. So, all in all, I'm a pretty happy guy; my life is great and I can't wait to see what 2009 brings. Light The Lights; It's Christmas (Almost)

We're only a few days away from the big day now. Last year, I posted pictures of the lights display of the Gross family household, and it's gotten even bigger and better since. So bright are the lights from our house now you can immediately see them as soon as you turn the corner on our street. Many of our neighbors, like us, have added more and more lights and displays as well since last year. Our street is turning into a miniature Christmas Lane. It's great to watch all the cars slow down at night to look at all the block's lights and decorations. We even had a surprise group of 25 Christmas carolers who showed up the other night to entertain us and to share in the holiday spirit. So below are a couple of photos of our home:

Today, we are going to have our annual Christmas party/luncheon with all the employees of Hocus Pocus. Gifts were exchanged early this morning, and everyone is getting ready for a great catered lunch, which should be delivered shortly. My stomach is already grumbling in anticipation.

Oh, There's No Place Like Home For The Holidays

So the other night, Betty, Cole and I are out having dinner. Afterward, we decided to walk down the various shops and stores near the restaurant and do a little holiday window shopping. You'll never guess what I saw: an 8-foot tall animated nutcracker. The look on my face as I saw it moving and lighting up must have been obvious, because Betty knew I had to have it! I looked at her, she looked at me, and she said, "Where would we put it?" I immediately replied, "In our dining room, of course." "Of course," she replied, and so we purchased it on the spot and took it home. Now getting it home was another story. It wouldn't fit in my Jeep, so a quick trip home to get the pickup and back we went.

At this point, Max was waiting for us and wanted to know why we were going back to where we just came from. When Cole and I explained why, he had to join us. So off the three of us went back to the store. After about a 1/2 hour of examining our purchase and a phone call to the owner of the store, we figured out how to disassemble it and get it into the truck, because it was still too big! Arriving home, Betty now doubts that we'll actually fit it in the dining room due to its height. Fear not, I tell her. But Cole and I have doubts ourselves at this point, not letting on, however.

So in we carry the legs, then the body, then the arms, and keeping our fingers crossed, we put on the head. With 1/2 inch to clear, we bolted him together, plugged in the wires, and started him up. What a magnificent display! Now, we just have to figure out where to store him once Christmas is over...

Last weekend was Max's first Christmas Formal. He looked pretty sharp in his tux, and from what we heard, had a great time. A group of 50 of his friends rented a party bus which picked them up and took them to the Formal and restaurant, and then home again. First time I've ever seen a party bus -- it's really a good way to travel in style with a large screen TV, deluxe stereo system, and all the other bells and whistles that go along with it.

There are only 13 days left, believe it or not, until Christmas. We've been busier than ever this holiday season, and we cannot thank you enough! Well, Thanksgiving is officially over, and I hope you all had a great holiday. If Friday, the day after Thanksgiving is any indication of what's to come for the holidays, watch out! I got here at 5:00 AM Friday morning, and the phones were already ringing. We were incredibly busy all day, and it hasn't stopped yet. "Dad, can we go look at this car after dinner?" That was the question my son, Max, asked me last night. Let me start by saying that yesterday was an extremely long day for me, and the thought of going to a car lot was not particularly appealing in any way, shape, or form. However, my son is a good kid, and I thought, "What harm could there be?" After 3 different car lots, and on our way home, we saw the truck he was looking for. Before we even got out of the car to look at the truck, I made it abundantly clear to Max that no matter what, we were not buying a car tonight; we were just looking. Long story short, at 9:00 PM last night, my son is now the proud owner of a 2007 Chevy Silverado pickup. Oh, when will I learn?

Thanksgiving

So here I sit on Thanksgiving Eve, reflecting on all that I have to be thankful for in my life. First and most importantly, my incredible wife, Betty, who supports my every endeavor and project with the utmost enthusiasm and who loves me unconditionally. I can truly say that I could not have done all I have without her. For my four children: Rene, Aimee, Cole, and Max -- I am blessed that they are not only good kids, but good people. I'm thankful for good health, both my family's and mine. I'm thankful for my good friends, those I have been blessed to meet and will continue to meet in the coming years. I'm also thankful for another successful year doing what I love to do the most in life. And, of course, I'm thankful for all of you, who take time to read this blog week after week and support Hocus Pocus as much as you have.

Tomorrow, as every year, I'll be with my family at my mother in-law's house for our traditional family Thanksgiving celebration. There will be plenty of food, as always, lots of leftovers for those great next day turkey sandwiches. Friday will be the official shopping kickoff, and you can bet we'll be here. Personally, I'll begin the day at about 5:30 AM based on last year's post-Thanksgiving orders that were placed over the holiday and the day after.

So, as I wrap this up, it's a perfect winter day here in Fresno, California. It's 47 degrees outside and pouring rain, and we're all nice and comfortable here inside the offices and warehouse. As I reflect back on all that I'm thankful for, I'm reminded that I shouldn't just do it one day per year; but it's much more important to recognize it every single day. I have a pretty good life and wouldn't change a thing.

Spoke to Bob Kohler early in the week, and two brand new products will be available within the next 7-10 days, and they are DOOZIES! School's Out

Today is the last day of school before the Thanksgiving break for my youngest son, Max, and my oldest son, Cole. Cole will be coming home early next week to celebrate Thanksgiving with us. Last weekend, we spent Saturday and Sunday decorating the entire inside of our home for Christmas, and this week, Cole, Max, and my future son in-law, Jonathan, will be setting up all the outside decorations. It's been like a high-tech, highly engineered project. Between Max and Cole, they continue to draw out plans as to where everything will go. I'll post photos when all is completed.

Jingle Bells?

So I get in my car Monday to come to work, I turn on the radio, and lo and behold: "Jingle Bells" is playing. I think to myself, "This must be a commercial for something, because it's only November 10th." Next song is "Holly Jolly Christmas." Wait a minute. It's only November 10th! The announcer comes on and gleefully exclaims that it's Christmas music 24 hours a day, 7 days a week until December 26th. How can this be? It's only November 10th!! As I write the blog today, and only a few days have passed since then, I realize we're only two weeks away from Thanksgiving! Where has this year gone?

Happy Halloween!

It's been an exciting week here, including a visit from Mark and Nani Wilson the past 2 days. Due to storms in our area today, the ghosts and goblins have already wreaked their havok here at Hocus Pocus. This morning, we were without power in a portion of our building but all is up and running fine now.

What a great thrill it was to have Mark and Nani Wilson here for the last two days! They arrived Wednesday afternoon, spent time together at my house, we had a nice dinner, and talked and reminisced about magic, business, and everything else until almost midnight. To my surprise, they gave me a package of several vintage Genii magazines that they appeared on the covers and featured articles written about them and their magical career. I've had a great time pouring through the magazines the past few days. What memories they've brought back... Thursday, Mark and Nani spent the entire day here at Hocus Pocus, working with Mike on a special upcoming project and overseeing the packaging of the Allakazam Egg. Their visit was undoubtedly the high point of the entire week!

Passings

Ted Lesley

It was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of one of mentalism's greatest contributors and a good friend, Ted Lesley, this week. Ted was one of the nicest people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. A true gentleman with a huge heart and a real passion for his craft. A wonderful sense of humor kept our conversations exciting and lively, and I will never forget the opportunity we had to bring him with us to the second MAGIC Live Convention in Las Vegas. What a great time we all had, and especially the laughs we shared in Robert Baxt's car on the way to the World's Greatest Magic Show as they one-upped each other with one-liners. I laughed so hard, my sides were cramping. The last few years, Ted fought very hard against many different illnesses, but for him, the long battle is now over, and he can rest in peace. We'll miss you, Ted. You left not only an indelible mark on the world of magic and mentalism, but on my heart as well.

So now we're back to Halloween. The weather here is perfect: dark, rainy, and gloomy. It won't be long now until those trick or treaters will be knocking on our door. So Happy Halloween to you and yours.

One Last Weekend

This marks my last weekend off before the official beginning of the holiday season at Hocus Pocus. It was Betty's birthday on Wednesday, so we're going to celebrate by going to San Francisco. While we're there, we'll visit with our son, Cole, who will undoubtedly join us for dinner Saturday night at our favorite San Francisco restaurant, Scoma's. We're both looking forward to this final weekend of rest and relaxation before the big holiday push.

Speaking of the big holiday push, it seems like since last Thursday, it's evident by the amount of orders coming through that you are all ahead of the curve regarding your holiday shows and events. Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, then New Year's. Oh, my! Soon it will be 2009. The older I get, the faster time flies!

Last week, Betty and I attended the Magic Castle Swap Meet and had a great time. I picked up quite a few bargains and a couple of collectibles, which I'm sure you will see me list here soon on the web site. Friday evening, we had dinner at the Magic Castle with Mark and Nani Wilson along with Chuck Kirchner, owner of Magic City. After our dinner, we all watched the show in the Palace of Mystery. The most outstanding act on the bill that night were the Huber Marionettes. I haven't seen a marionette artist like this since the late Barclay Shaw! These marionettes were almost alive. Here's a video link from their web site so you can see what I mean. Even though Mr. Huber was not a magician, it truly was magical to see him animate his cast of characters! Truly an art form rarely seen today. What a treat it was to witness this great performer!

What Came First, The Chicken Or The Allakazam Egg?

Well, we hinted, we teased, we kept you on the ropes for a while, but no more; as many of you have noticed, our latest project with Mark and Nani Wilson, The Allakazam Egg, is now available! After our last successful venture in the production of the limited edition Allakazam Hat (now completely sold out), I wanted to release another Allakazam gem. From personal experience, I always wanted to perform the classic Silk to Egg effect, and had for many, many years. Tomorrow, Betty and I will be heading south again to Hollywood for the bi-annual Magic Castle Swap Meet Saturday morning. It's always fun to attend because you never know who and what you'll see. It's hard to believe we're already midway through October with Halloween rearing its "ugly" head right around the corner... From the orders being placed, I can see that many of you are well ahead of the curve by ordering effects suitable for Halloween shows, and I've even seen many orders for Christmas effects coming across my desk. You should be commended for keeping your clientele in mind. Remember, just by adding one or two items like this will set you apart from your competition and keep you in demand for next year as well.

Speaking of Halloween effects, Tim Wisseman's Dead Ringer Spirit Bell has been one of our biggest selling items so far! Every Thursday afternoon, like clockwork, Tim brings in 10 to 14 Dead Ringers, and as fast as he brings them in, they are out the door with none left over! Amazing! Speaking of new releases, we're just days away now from announcing our latest collaboration with Mark and Nani Wilson. We've been teasing you for a while now, and I promise, the wait is almost over. Everything is ready to go; we're just awaiting the final DVD edit, and the final product will be complete. As with anything the Wilsons are involved in, everything must be perfect before the release. Months of preparation have gone into this project, including custom-made gimmick that I had made to Mark's specifications. I can't tell you how happy and thrilled I am to be working with Mark and Nani again; they are exceptional people and a delight to speak with and be around. Their knowledge of magic and magic's history is incomparable, and this new product is an example of their committment and dedication to the art of magic. I promise you that this effect will be for everyone and will appeal to any and all audiences.

On a personal note, although the current economic situation may have our spirits a bit lower than usual, I'm reminded of what the Reverend Robert Schueller once said, "Tough times don't last, tough people do." We are lucky enough to be in the entertainment industry, and we have the ability as performers to transport our audiences to positive, mystical, and happy places. The Mystery of the Blue Crate

The title to this week's blog sounds like an upcoming adventure of Indiana Jones' next movie, but it's even better. Last week I got an email from a longtime customer and good friend who wishes to remain anonymous. In the email I was told that a blue crate would be arriving soon to Hocus Pocus, and it would contain a special gift for me. Now I can't tell you how excited I was to get this information. Not only a gift, but it was in a crate! So every day, when UPS arrived, like a little kid on Christmas morning, I'd run out to the warehouse to see if the mysterious blue crate had arrived. Now before I go any further, I am assuming that this blue crate wouldn't be a big object. Boy was I wrong:

I circled the blue crate when it arrived like a turkey vulture, trying to guess as to its contents inside. Mike and I tried to figure out how to open it since we didn't have the necessary tools. The lid was closed tight by a multitude of screws. "Get the toolbox!" I exclaimed. Frantically, I searched the hodgepodge of tools: hammers? We have many of those. Pliers? Those as well. Extension cords, soldering iron, glue gun, the old rod that came from my broken desk chair 3 years ago (why it's still here, I have no idea; the chair went to the dump a long time ago). Ah, finally a screwdriver. But not a Phillips; a flat head screwdriver!

So off Mike goes to the local Harbor Freight store and returns with Phillips head screwdriver in hand. The suspense killing me, I think of getting an axe and busting open the mysterious blue crate. Instead, as fast as I can, I remove the screws from the top of the crate like a madman. I am now reminded of Darrin McGavin in A Christmas Story with the mysterious crate containing the infamous "Leg Lamp." After removing over a dozen screws, the top of the crate will still not come undone! Why, you ask? Because it's held down by over a dozen finishing nails. Back to the toolbox. With pliers and hammer in hand, I frantically remove the nails and the excitement builds as I remove the lid of the crate!

The first thing I see is lots and lots of foam. And soon, something very colorful appears. A note inside explains what is contained inside this glorious crate: It's an original illusion owned and performed by the late Doug Henning on his World of Magic television special! To say that I was overwhelmed by this gracious gift is a complete understatement! As many of you already know, I have a large collection of Doug Henning memorabilia, including costumes, posters, and illusions. This will definitely be one of my most prized and cherished possessions! The graphics and paint work on the cabinet are flawless, and the illusion itself was that a cabinet was shown empty. A tiny tuxedo placed on a hangar is placed inside the cabinet. Cabinet was then spun around, its door opened, and a live monkey wearing that tiny tuxedo was produced! I even have the monkey's tuxedo!

So now along with Harry Blackstone Jr.'s tuxedo, parts of his Garden of Flowers act, one of his Vanishing Birdcages, Mark and Nani Wilson's illusions and memorabilia, a cast of Billy McComb's hands, this piece of magic history will be proudly showcased in our growing mini-museum here at Hocus Pocus!

Blue crates don't come around all that often, but boy when they do... So special thanks to the anonymous donor; you know who you are! I hope my story was amusing because we certainly had a great and interesting time the moment the mysterious blue crate appeared. Hope your mysterious blue crate arrives for you someday soon.

What Did You Think?

Last night was the David Blaine Dive of Death TV special. What I found interesting was that there was very little advertising and publicity (at least in our area) for the show. It wasn't until last week that I even became aware that it was on! You would think that a 2-hour special on a major network would have garnered a little more attention. But with that said, here are my thoughts:

Each David Blaine special I've watched I go back and compare it to the very first one. The first episode was full of close-up magic, although standard effects, it truly did bring a renewed interest to a new generation of budding magicians. Whether his style appealed to you or not, you have to admit that it was a boon to magic in general. Maybe I'm an old fuddy-duddy, but my personal preferences were specials like the World's Greatest Magic specials that aired for 5 years on Thanksgiving Eve and even David Copperfield and the Doug Henning specials. There was something for everyone in those specials, and there was a great cross section of magic being exhibited. But remember, this is just my opinion. I think that last night's Blaine special was the closest offering to his first endeavor: more street magic, more reactions, more focus on spectators than performer, and out of it came several great effects like Lit and Compression, both of which are now available on our web site.

Unfortunately, however, there is still some question about stooges and confederates and staged performances. Is this really magic? Is it really necessary? When you think of all the money spent and technology available in this day and age, I feel that it is unnecessary. Think of all the pioneers of magic on television, Mark and Nani Wilson, for example: did they have a need for stooges and camera trickery and set up shots? Absolutely not; what you saw was what you got, all in real time, and the best part: they could actually perform these effects again and again if necessary. In other words, none of the effects they performed were a "miracle" that could only be performed on television and not in a live setting. Take, for example, a certain performer with a weekly A&E television special (no need to mention names): in my estimation, he has not pushed forward the advancement of our art, rather he has set it back. Quite a bit, in fact. When non-magicians walk up to me and ask me if I watch that particular show on A&E, I reply "Not any longer." I also think the public is smart enough to discern what is "real magic" and what is camera trickery/stooged/set-up. Performing in this manner is taking the easy way out; ANYONE could do it.

But back to Blaine. On a scale from 1 to 10, I would rate last night's show a strong 7. I would like to see him get back to basics as he did in his first show (and I know the public agrees with me). It's unfortunate that his final stunt did not come off as planned for live TV, but that's the risk you take. All in all, I believe the real focus of the show should be everything but the finale.

A Full Schedule

Wow. We've had a pretty full schedule and a busy week here at Hocus Pocus. In fact, so much so, we've now had our local UPS delivery person schedule 2 pickups per day instead of the usual 1. And we have you to thank for keeping us so busy, so thank you very much. We had scheduled to take pictures of the packing and shipping department working hard to get your packages out as soon as possible, but we were just too busy to do so...

Last week, I spoke about the fact that we here at Hocus Pocus were very excited to reach the century mark in exclusives. The Party May Be Over, But...

The party may be over but the fun hasn't stopped. My birthday was Monday, September 1, and there's never been a better one! Starting with my time off last Friday, I got to work in my yard, go to the movies, spend some time with my family, and receive some pretty nice gifts -- it was like an early Christmas. I must thank so many of you who sent emails, phone calls, and even some birthday cards for your thoughtfulness. It was very much appreciated.

53 And Counting

It seems like only a few months ago, I was dreading my 52nd birthday. Well, all that's passed and here we are at 53. I still have a few days, though as September 1st is the official day. Rather than dreading it as I did so last year, I'm actually looking forward to it. In all honesty, I've never felt better in my life than I do right now, so what's to dread? After all; it's all in your head, they say, and I feel like I'm in my 30s, so that's how old I am. My hair may be grayer, and there may be less of it, but I still refuse to wear bifocals (1 pair to see and 1 pair to read, and I plan on keeping it that way for as long as I can).

My sons, Cole and Max, surprised me with a couple of early birthday presents this year: a pair of gargoyle garden sconces, which we promptly hung up in our garden outside, and a brand new tool/garden shed, complete with electricity. I can't tell you how much I will use this to save trips from walking back and forth to the garage to the garden. Now everything will be in one place just steps away. They did an outstanding job right down to the ornate door knocker.

Looking at it, it looks like a plain piece of Plexi with a negative image of my face, however, when backlit, it becomes an actual photograph, complete with the shadows, darks, lights, and all details. It looks like a black and white photograph -- truly magical! It is based on a centuries-old principle of carving into marble, and it was very thoughtful of Jay to send this to me on my birthday. Who's the new guy?

This is the question we seem to get a lot here lately. If you've called over the last couple of weeks, you've no doubt spoken to our good friend, Tim Mannix. Tim is a very well-known and successful full-time magician currently living in North Hollywood. The last few times we have been dealers at the Magic Castle Dealer's Day, Tim has always graciously volunteered to help us. Tim has been such an asset that he's come here to give us a test drive and possibly make a change. We've definitely enjoyed our time with Tim while he's been here, and we hope that our working relationship prospers further. Tim would be a fantastic addition to Hocus Pocus and its customers due to his vast knowlege of magic and his enthusiastic approach to learning and sharing. Back to School

My oldest son, Cole, packed up and went back to college Tuesday, where he moved into his brand new dorm room as the resident assistant for the second year in a row. He's very excited as his room is bigger this year with private bathroom and shower. (This is a major bonus; no more sharing.) Next Monday, Max goes back to high school as a junior. Hard to believe only one more year and he graduates high school. Where has the time gone?

8-8-08. It must be our lucky day; it was only a week ago today that I was in Anaheim, California at Disneyland for the first time in 12 years! Betty, Max, Cole, and I were in awe of all the changes that have occurred since our last visit. We arrived about 1:00 PM and took the Monorail from our hotel into the park. The weather was great and much cooler than here in Fresno, and the first ride we went on was Star Tours, one of my personal favorites. After that, Space Mountain, then the Jungle Cruise, and Pirates of the Caribbean and the best part: we waited no longer than 20 minutes in any line. Off to dinner and back to the park until almost midnight.

Saturday, we took in the new California Adventure part, where I found my new favorite ride, the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror! Cole and I were the only ones to brave this one; Betty and Max sat out. As soon as the ride was over, Cole and I looked at each other and said, "We're doing this again." We got back in line and convinced Max to join us this time. As soon as it was over, we all three did it again. After several hours at California Adventures, we went back into Disneyland, where we all enjoyed a nice dinner at the Blue Bayou Restaurant inside the Pirates of the Caribbean ride.

After dinner, it was time to save our place for the Fantasmic Show. Although I have seen this show several times, and you have to save your seat at least 3 hours in advance on hard concrete, it's definitely worth the wait. Following Fantasmic, we watched the now-famous nightly Disneyland evening fireworks show. A few more rides, and a couple of shops later, it was almost midnight and time to go back to our hotel room.

Saturday morning, the boys went over to the parks while Betty and I drove to Alhambra, California, about 30 minutes away, to attend the wedding of Robert and Yumi Baxt. When we arrived at the home of their friends where the wedding was held, the first thing we saw was one of those carnival-style photo booths as we came up the walkway. Every guest sat in the booth and took a series of pictures which were saved and put into a photo album/memory book. A clever idea and definitely a Robert Baxt touch. Going into the large back yard, everything was beautifully decorated and the wedding area was completely covered with at tent. There were 140 guests in attendance, many of them well-known magicians like Carl Ballantine, Franz Harary, Johnny Ace Palmer, Dale Salwak, ventriloquist Mark Merchant, Bruce Gold, Goldfinger and Dove, Amos Levkovitch, Todd Brown, and Steve Valenti.

At 2:30, Robert made a small speech and the wedding ceremony began. Yumi was absolutely beautiful and Robert very dapper in his tuxedo. The ceremony was presided over by a rabbi, who was as much a stand-up comedian as he was a rabbi. Immediately following the ceremony, Robert and Yumi greeted all the guests. There was dancing, great food, and fellowship. Robert and Yumi did a fantastic job, and it could not have been topped!

All in all, we had a great weekend, and Betty and I wish Robert and Yumi all the happiness in the world. Congratulations, Robert and Yumi.

MAGIC HISTORY

I spoke to Mark Wilson several times this week about a very interesting set of books he just uncovered in his warehouse. Below, I'd like to share the letter and information about this incredible set of books:

Last week I discovered in a box of books in my warehouse a 4-volume set of "Recreations in Mathematics and Natural Philosophy". I had received them as a gift during my unexpected 50th birthday party, with which Nani totally surprised me. It was quite an affair. There were some 200 guests, including many of our magical friends such as Dai Vernon, John Booth, Kuda Bux, Billy McComb, Marvin Roy and Carol, Harry Blackstone Jr. and Gay, Johnny Thompson and Pam, Shimada and Diana, Bill and Irene Larsen, Milt Larsen, Walter “Zaney” Blaney, Bruce Cervon, and many others, better than any magic convention I can recall.

The books were a gift from my business manager, whose showbiz oriented management firm represented many talented people in Hollywood, such as Marlon Brando and Judy Garland. When I opened the gift, with the excitement and pandemonium of the party, I had thanked him, but never really looked inside those books until last week. Thumbing through the books, on the title page, I saw they were a first edition set, published in 1803 in London. A few days later I looked again and saw that the previous owner had written his name several times inside the volumes. It was Harry Houdini! I also saw that one of his signatures was “Harry Handcuff Houdini,” which I had not seen before, but I understand is even more valuable to Houdini collectors. Each volume has over 450 pages. In addition, the title page in each book states, "there are 100 quatro plates." These are fold-out pages with line drawings illustrating the various sections. As I looked I realized, over the intervening 200 years, many of those drawings and many items described in the volumes, have developed into our present-day magic effects and illusions. Although I am certainly not a rare book expert, it seems to me the pages are of excellent quality, just a little tan at the edges from two centuries of aging. The covers are also excellent, but perhaps not the originals. Frankly, I don't know enough about books printed in 1803 to tell the difference.

The bindings are totally intact, every page is completely readable with no folds, and their are almost no spots on any of the pages. You will see several pages in the attached photographs. The photographs are as follows:

1. Title page, volume one, where I first saw "published in London in 1803."

2. Title page, volume two, Harry Houdini signature.

3. Title page, volume three, Harry Houdini signature.

4. Title page, volume four, Harry Handcuff Houdini signature,

5. Back page, volume four, "Harry Houdini bought these 4 volumes in Birmingham, England.”
These and other notes are in the same handwriting as the Houdini autographs.

6. Photograph 6 has notes written on the edge of a page in volume four, in the "automaton" section that refer to a sentence concerning the most important automata of the day. It reads; "We have also of late been amused with these surprising performances of the chess players, the small but sweet singing bird, the writing figure, the musical lady, the conjurer, etc. etc". Houdini marked this sentence on the side for quick reference and there are two notes, each of a different size, which I feel sure were written at different times. The first line is a question and the second is the answer he wrote to himself... The first, "What did Houdin invent?" The second, "Houdin bought the figures'" These notes about Houdin could be one of the discoveries, which influenced Harry’s book, "The Unmasking of Robert-Houdin."

Photo #7 is a quarto drawing, which is not magical, but I find particularly fascinating, from the " pyrotechnics " section, is an almost exact outline of one of our latest fighter jet airplanes. Wow! You will see it` in the upper right hand corner of photograph #7. Every time I pick up one of the books, I am amazed at what I find related to magic. There are sections devoted to automata, magic squares, optics, quick mathematical calculations, pyrotechnics, puzzles, riddles, betchas and even card tricks. Many of these are predecessors of the magic we do today. As an example, in volume 4, I found "Magic Oracle," a magic trick written in the now classic style of "effect" and "secret.", The effect is how to make written answers to questions magically appear on blank pieces of paper when they are placed into a special gimmicked box. The method is completely explained, including how to build the special box and how to gimmick the papers. It even recommends you make some papers in multiples, so that you can secretly select, the best answer to the question. There are even clever names for the props and suggested patter! In the “mirror” section under Opticals in volume 2, one heading reads: “Of some tricks or kinds of illusion, which may be performed by means of plane mirrors". And sure enough, the next pages give explanations of illusions that can be done with mirrors. Yes, they were certainly right about that, weren't they? And don't forget those card tricks.

Although I have only read a few, I happened upon one that has developed into what we now call "Card Counting," the mathematical Blackjack gambling cheat system now banned from casinos in Las Vegas. Also on a blank page adjacent to the page on which Houdini states he purchased the four volumes in Birmingham, England. In conclusion, the good news is, I received these rather incredible books as a gift on my 50th birthday. The bad news is, that was 29 years ago. To end on a happy note, being here to read them now is far better than any other option I can think of.

On the homefront, the temperatures here earlier this week was like being on the coast. In the morning, we were leaving the doors to the offices and warehouse open until we had to turn the air conditioning on later in the day. It was so nice, but it wasn't to last. Yesterday, it spiked to 104 degrees, today will be 105 and Sunday will climb to 106. As I type this, I realize that we are only 90 days away from Fall, and I cannot wait.

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?

Well, not yet but Mike's band, "Smoke Break" is climbing in popularity all over Central California. Selling out in the local bars and pubs, every owner has had glowing reviews on the band's choice of music and the caliber of showmanship. Tonight, Smoke Break plays at Kimmee's in Clovis, CA. from 9 PM - 1 AM (good luck, Mike) and it is guaranteed to be filled to capacity. They will also be playing again on Sunday evening from 7-11 PM, so if you are in the area, show up early to avoid cover charges and lines. In fact, Mike told me that during intermissions, the band would go outside for a break and the lines outside were something out of Studio 54 days. Eerie. Word gets around, and I wouldn't be surprised if Mike has to put his close-up gigs on hold for the music business.

Next week, the wedding bells toll for Yumi and Robert Baxt. They tie the knot a week from Saturday in an intimate gathering of close family and friends. Betty and I will be making the trip to Southern California to attend and hey, who knows: maybe we'll go to Disneyland!

Cars, Cars, and More Cars!

As I've written before, my son, Max is completely car crazy. He has now added to his collection of vehicles an early model 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am. You remember: just like the one Burt Reynolds drove in Smokey and the Bandit. To say that it is a fixer-upper is an understatement, but you'd think he was driving a Rolls Royce when you see him in this thing. Grinning from ear to ear, he believes he has a real treasure. Who knows: it just may be that diamond in the rough. At 16 years of age, he already owns 2 vehicles and I cringe to think of what he may have at 18. I hope our house doesn't turn into a car lot!

Betty and I took in the Dark Knight last weekend. We both enjoyed it thoroughly, and as many have said, the late Heath Ledger's performance was stellar and captivating. At 2 hours and 40 minutes, it's a long one, but there's enough action to keep you on the edge of your seats. If you haven't seen it yet, it's worth your time and effort.

So that's about it for me. There will be no blog next week as I'll be in Southern California attending Yumi's and Robert's wedding. I'll definitely report back when I return. On a personal note, I just want to say thanks for taking time to read this blog and visit our site.

My friend, Craig Harlan

Friends. We all have them. Some closer than others, but still friends, nonetheless. Good friends, TRUE friends are hard to come by. They are the ones that you can call on at any time, day or night, and they'll give you the shirt off their back if you ask them. Always there to listen to your stories and to support you in good times and in bad throughout your life. So let me tell you about my TRUE friend, Craig Harlan.

Craig and I became friends about 9 years ago when he wandered into the magic shop. A child psychologist by profession who always had an interest in magic, Craig thought it would be a great icebreaker working with his young patients. He became a quick study and devoted student to the art of magic. Almost every afternoon, as his schedule allowed, he'd stop by the shop to check out the latest trick, book, or video/DVD. He loved to read anything he got his hands on, and so the books were always the preferred choice. He was a voracious reader and a real sponge. You could always count on Craig to sit in the front row for all lectures and magical events held at Hocus Pocus. Come to think of it, I cannot recall one that he missed... It's funny how his life and mine paralleled; much of the same incidents happening to the both of us.

Several years ago, when it was paramount that I lose my weight, Craig was instrumental in helping me do so. Constantly calling and checking in with me, Craig always monitored my health and took an active interest in my well-being. One of the favorite things he's like to do was go to the Magic Castle, and last October, when he and Deborah went with Betty and me, we all had a great time.

You may remember that in June of last year, Craig was battling cancer. At the time, Craig's prognosis looked good. In fact, after chemotherapy, Craig came into the shop frequently and chatted magic with me almost once per week. He even took a trip to Europe with his girlfriend, Deborah, and everything was looking up.

Unfortunately, it wasn't to be; the cancer returned. A long, hard fight Craig had, and the last few weeks, he was in tremendous pain and had to be hospitalized. When Betty and I visited him, as heavily drugged as he was, he still hadn't lost his sense of humor or positive outlook.

Last Thursday, Craig's battle with cancer ended and I lost a good friend to this horrible disease. It's still hard for me to believe. He was only 2 years older than me - 54 years-old and still had so much he wanted to do. It's times like this that really put our lives into perspective. I have promised myself to do all the things I still want to do, including spending more time with those close to me: family and friends. Especially, I am also trying not to take things for granted in the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Even though our friendship was short, I learned a lot from Craig and still continue to do so. In fact, he has given me an incredible gift, and I plan on using and sharing that gift as much as possible. I'll miss his surprise visits to the shop and his head popping into my office door with his list of products and books he would ask me about. The funny stories we shared (especially about our kids) I'll always remember and cherish.

So don't sweat the small stuff. Get on the phone to your friend and say hi. Share those stories and moments and store them in your memory banks. My friend may be gone, but he'll never be forgotten.

Yesterday, it was a whopping 112 degrees here in Fresno, California! Today, the weatherman tells us that it's going to cool down to a brisk 110 degrees. Oh boy! Real Magic

Ione Losander

Luna and Ione after surgery

As many of you already know, this week brought news of a brand new baby girl into the world. Dirk and Luna Losander welcomed Baby Ione less than a week ago. Imagine their shock when they were informed that Ione needed to have immediate heart surgery. Imagine their greater shock when they learned that their health insurance provider would not cover this life-saving emergency procedure!! When I spoke to Losander this week after hearing the news, my stomach was in knots. Being a father of four myself, I could not possibly imagine what Dirk and Luna were going through. But I knew that the magic community had to do something. And do something, we did!!!

Many friends of the Losanders, including the cast of the World's Greatest Magic Show in Las Vegas began sending out emails in calls for help. We immediately sent out a letter of our own on Monday asking for donations to help the Losanders in their dire time of need. I cannot express my shock and grattitude for the immediate generosity shown by many of you. Within minutes of sending out the letter, donations began to pour in from all over the world!!! I'm excited to say that within a span of 48 hours, you have helped to raise over $5100.00 in donations, all of which go directly to the Losander family!

Dear Friends,

Once again we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all your prayers and good wishes and generous contributions to our baby girl Ione. Thanks to all of you and the entire magic community as a whole, we were able to expediently get her surgery on Monday. She came through it great and the procedure was, as far as they can see, a success! We have her home today and she is doing very well.

We had an excellent surgical team and the Doctor was first rate and everyone was so kind and helpful. It was an amazingly positive experience. I think all our energies combined may have had something to do with that! Now what's next is a series of follow ups and constant monitoring to ensure that the heart continues to function correctly and nothing else develops as she grows. It was great that we were able to do this as quickly as we did as there was a tremendous amount of pressure on her heart and it could of given out without notice, at least now she is not at risk of sudden death.

The costs are considerable and with no hope of getting her coverage now or in the future due to a pre-existing condition, the medical expenses will continue for a while but we are optimistic and with friends like you, I know we will be OK. Let The Sideshow Begin!

It's no big secret around here that I am a huge fan of the Sideshow. Ever since I was a kid, I remember the Sideshow that arrived every year with the big Fresno Fair. Those HUGE banners that showcased two-headed cows, sword swallowers, fire-eaters, bearded ladies, you get the idea... Now, after all these years, I am an avid collector of Sideshow memorabilia. If you've ever visited our warehouse/offices, you've no doubt seen the walls lined with these authentic and reproduced Sideshow banners. My office is filled with shrunken heads (not real ones, of course), Fiji Mermaids, a real Frog Band, Flea Circuses, Pickled Punks, and even a two-headed chicken. Add to the mix that famous Sideshow impresario Bobby Reynolds recently moved to Fresno and visits quite often, I am in Sideshow heaven.

It was with great honor that we were graced with a visit from Sideshow performer and magician, George the Giant! George The Giant is not a larger than life performer because of his size, though he stands an impressive seven foot three inches in height. It might be because it has been mentioned; George is one of the most complete sideshow performers today, by performers and audiences alike.

George has appeared as Colossus in Tim Burtons movie "Big Fish", "Tough Luck", "Firecracker", and "Relative Strangers", as well as his many television appearances like "The Tonight Show," "Touched By An Angel", "The Guardian", "The Strip", and "According To Jim". Currently, he appears on the network TV hit "America's Got Talent," and you can catch his appearance next week performing a stunt with lots of firecrackers, and that's all we'll say...

While George was here, he shared stories of the Sideshow and had a ball looking at all the memorabilia and banners displayed throughout the shop. Billed as "The World's Tallest Sword Swallower," George offered us a real honest-to-goodness Sword Swallowing demonstration.

George has been performing Sword Swallowing, Fire Eating, the Bed of Nails, and other Sideshow feats since the early 1990s, and he even brought along with him his Chupacabra Sideshow display, which you can see below:

After all this fun, I had to go back to work and George had to hit the road to go to his next venue, but he didn't leave us empty-handed; he left us with George the Giant T-Shirts, Coloring and Activity Books, and a George the Giant Sword Swallowing giveaway card with a plastic sword in George's mouth, all of which will be proudly displayed in my office for everyone to see.

103 Degrees?

I have to laugh when I look at my calendar as it says tomorrow is the official first day of Summer. I've got news: it's been Summer here for the last 2 weeks! The temperatures here have climbed to a scorching 103 by mid-afternoon. It's supposed to be 105 today, 105 tomorrow, and back down to the mid-nineties next week. Ooh, a cool-down. We're doing everything we can to stay as cool as possible, but it has been a tad difficult. I think my swimming pool and air conditioner will get a good workout this weekend; we're going to do everything to keep from melting.

On the home front, my son Max is excited to get his very first job! He'll be working as an intern for an auto enhancement company. As I've said before, Max is car crazy, and he'll be working with a company that does custom tires, rims and other hi-tech car customization. Betty and I are proud of him for going out and vigorously pursuing Summer employment. Today's his first day on the job and to say he's excited is an understatement. This would be his equivalent to my working at a magic store when I was his age.

Exciting news from the Magic Land of Allakazam: Mark and Nani Wilson have been sending me glowing reviews of their son Mike's Show "Cirque Shanghai" Chinese Acrobat Troupe. I know how proud Mark and Nani are of Mike's success. Of course, he had great teachers. Other Allakazam news: I'm very excited about the new project that Hocus Pocus and Mark and Nani Wilson are working on. The final prototypes arrived just the other day, and Mark has given the thumbs up, so we're moving full-force. That's all I can tell you about this for right now, but keep your eyes glued to the web site for this new release. I will tell you that it is a classic of magic with Mark's perfected handling that will suit anyone's act.

Around the shop, we're still staying extremely busy, which we appreciate. There are several brand new item that are worthy of your attention, including Phork, the new self-bending fork effect! Mike has now seen the Incredible Hulk more times in the last week than I can count (this is not exaggeration, it is fact). His enthusiasm was so infectious that even my son, Cole went to see the movie, and now they're on my case to see the film. Mike has even offered a money-back guarantee if Betty and I don't like the film. Interesting, considering that he has no financial interest in the film at all. Every day, instead of our usual good-morning greeting, Mike's first words are, "Have you seen The Incredible Hulk yet?" So this weekend, I guess I'll take the plunge even though I'm more of a Batman fan. I'll try to think green.

Happy Father's Day

As I write this today and look at the calendar, I can't believe that half the year has already gone by! Normally, I talk about things going on here at the shop and all the future irons I have in the fires, but I wanted to forgo that today.

Can you hear his words of wisdom? I'm talking about your dad, of course. How many times have you gone to your dad for help, advice, or just to talk? Where would we be without our dads? I noticed that it's time to recognize all the dads around the world because, as you are probably already aware, this Sunday is Father's Day! Let me tell you a little bit about my dad:

My dad was instrumental in the creation of this business, believe it or not! When I was a mere 18 years old and decided I wanted to be in the magic business, my father was right there supporting me all the way. He taught me to work hard and do what it takes to be successful and not be afraid to go the extra mile. Although he may have had his doubts about my success in the business at first, he never once voiced them. Not once! Instead, he supported me, helped me get a bank loan, and he even came and helped me paint the walls and hang shelving at my first store! I learned from my dad how to be a good businessman, but more importantly, how to take care of my children and how to be a good husband. He was always the best audience whenever I got the newest magic tricks and wanted to perform them. If I could fool him, I knew it was perfect. If not, back to the drawing board.

My dad had a great sense of humor and was always the center of attention at any party or get-together he attended. He attracted people like a magnet. He stood a full 6' 6" tall, a bit intimidating when you first saw and met him, had a boisterous voice, however, he had a heart of gold. He would give you the shirt off his back and the last dollar in his pocket without hesitation if you needed it. He was honest, hard-working, and never selfish. He had literally hundreds of friends who I didn't even know, and he was never a stranger anywhere he went. He was always there for my sister and me no matter what we were going through! Always supportive and overly patient, a trait of his I wish I had inherited, he was a great provider, and we always had everything we needed and then some.

He worked long hours, sometimes up to 14 hours per day, sometimes weeks on end without any days off to make sure his family were well taken care of, and he never complained. No matter how busy he was, he always had time for his family.

When we were kids, our Father's Day tradition was to let Dad sleep in on Sunday morning followed by the breakfast of his choice! Then we would go visit my grandparents, and the highlight was going to Foster's to get a Root Beer Freeze! Sounds simple but it was a great time for us all!

It has been 18 years since my dad passed away, and I still think about him every day. Referring to his words of wisdom whenever it comes to making a life or business decision, I always find myself reflecting and repeating the words of advice and love he always gave me.

So, tomorrow, I'm going to do something that my dad always did for us: I'm going to take a day off and spend it with the family. Saturday, we're having a family barbecue with all my family, aunts, uncles, siblings, children, etc. to celebrate an early Father's Day and my daughter Renee's engagement. The pool will no doubt be full of kids and the back yard will be at capacity. I can't think of a better way to spend my Father's Day weekend.

So, if you're a dad, happy Father's Day, and if you can, wish your dad the same.

Getting While the Gecko's Good

The phone rings. It's an order for the Gecko. The email alert goes off. It's another order for the Gecko. The fax machine receives a fax. It's yet another order for the Gecko. Gecko, Gecko, Gecko, that's the buzz word at Hocus Pocus these last few days. In case you are living in a cave, Gecko by Jim Rosenbaum, is the hottest ticket in magic-dom at the moment. Nothing else this year has even come close. This is an exciting project that Jim let us in on about a year ago in its early stages of development, even sharing early prototypes with us. He has had major input from major players in magic to help bring his vision to completion.

Many of you have noticed a new voice on the phone here at Hocus Pocus, and I'm proud to say that my oldest son, Cole, is filling in during his Summer break from college. He'll be answering the phones, taking orders, and even helping out in the shipping department from time to time along with assisting Ken in customer service. Who knows; maybe he'll be sitting in the captain's seat before too long... Make sure you introduce yourself the next time you call.

Paul Romhany's latest effect, Lemon Tree, just arrived and all pre-orders are shipping today. We still have a limited supply left if you are interested in something completely different for your shows. I begged Paul for over a year to release this routine, which he finally agreed to, but only in a limited amount.

Congratulations to Yumi Homma and Robert Baxt on their wedding announcement, which was just received in today's mail. August 2nd is the big day, and they'll be enjoying an afternoon wedding at a private residence. Betty and I are very happy for Robert, and we think the world of Yumi. We look forward to spending their special day with them.

Going to take this Friday off for a little rest and relaxation after a very busy week. Make sure you tune in to VH1 tonight for the finale of Celebracadabra. Check your local listings for times. I'll definitely be checking it out.

What's With This Weather?

Last weekend, Memorial Day Weekend, was a time that is usually spent sitting around the pool, catching some rays, and enjoying a barbecue with your family. Not this year. Believe it or not, it was in the low 50s, cold and windy, and pouring rain until midday Monday. No one could believe it; the weekend before had been 104 degrees! Go figure. Today, as I write the blog, it's a cool 75 degrees outside. Summer, Winter, Spring, Fall? Which is it? Hopefully, the warmer days are just around the corner now. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Tommy Wonder Diminishing Cards

We've been extremely busy this week, even busier than usual for this time of year. The Tommy Wonder Diminishing Cards arrived at the beginning of the week, and all pre-orders have been shipped. We're almost sold out of the first batch and are anxiously awaiting our second shipment to arrive in 7-10 days.

We've gotten so much positive response from those of you who have purchased this fantastic item. Mine is displayed proudly in a custom made table and display case (seen above), and I proudly showcase it here in the storefront. Again, I can't thank Mark and Nani Wilson enough for allowing Hocus Pocus to bring you this once-in-a-lifetime piece of magical history!

On the home front, Max, Cole, and I built a large planter this week behind our Coi Pond, and it couldn't look more fantastic. Yesterday, five and 1/2 yards of topsoil was delivered, which Cole and Max spent the better part of the afternoon filling the planter. Tonight and tomorrow, we'll spend planting ferns and other greenery to accent the Coi Pond and waterfall. I look forward to it; in my other life, I must have been a frustrated landscaper.

Betty and I checked out the new Indiana Jones film last weekend, and enjoyed it very much. Although it has been met with mixed reviews, we both gave it two thumbs up and hope it's not another 20 years before another.

For those of you who don't know, our very own Mike Giusti grew up an avid comic book reader and collector. Over ten thousand comic books stored in plastic bags and in boxes, he is running out of room at home. And you thought my ball vase collection was bad. His desk at work and the walls behind are all decorated with his favorite character of all time: The Incredible Hulk! Even before the popular television show with Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno hit the air, Mike had over 100 Hulk comic books to his collection, so he knows the character inside and out. The only issue he is missing is issue #1 which goes for more than Mike's entire magic entourage is worth. My point to all this is that there's a new Incredible Hulk movie (they're calling it a requel, a combination of a redo and a sequel) coming out June 13th with a brand new cast, including Edward Norton as Bruce Banner, Liv Tyler as Betty Ross, William Hurt as General Ross, and Tim Roth as the Hulk's nemesis, the Abomination. Mike has been geeking out every time a new movie and television clip is released. I have to admit, as much as I didn't care for the last Hulk movie in 2003, this one looks darned good. It's the Hulk movie everyone wanted to see back in 2003 and much more. Now all Mike has to do is figure out how to dye his skin green. No, kidding; I think he really wants to do this. 16 With A Licence To Drive!

We knew the day would come and how fast time has passed: yesterday, Wednesday, my son Max took his driving test and passed it with flying colors. He is now legally licensed to drive in the state of California, so watch out! Last night on my way home, he passed me going in the opposite direction in his Nova, and boy was it strange seeing him alone in his hot rod driving away. To say he's excited about this new aspect in his life is an understatement... You can see it in his face:

This weekend is Memorial Day Weekend, and I'll be taking time off Friday through Monday to spend with my family. I have lots planned including tomorrow, I'll be working in the yard which has become my favorite past time. Saturday, we head over to my sister in-law's to celebrate her son's engagement with a barbecue and get-together. Sunday, graduation parties to attend and Monday, Betty and I are planning on checking out the new Indiana Jones flick. The four days will be nice, but I know they'll fly by, so I plan on enjoying each and every moment.

Speaking of graduation, my son, Cole, will be moving back home this weekend as he finishes his second year of college. He put in several applications for a Summer job and knowing him, he'll be busy from dawn 'till dusk.

My daughter and her fiance, Jonathan, just returned home from Disneyland where they had a great time and enjoyed themselves immensely:

May has been one busy month for Mike; on top of working at Hocus Pocus, hosting a weekly radio show, performing at restaurants along with all the magic shows he's been booking in 100 degree-plus weather, his band, Smoke Break, has rapidly become very popular. So popular, in fact, that they are in demand and playing live from one to three times per week at prestigious hang outs, bars, and clubs here in Fresno. He'll be spending Friday and Sunday performing magic at his weekly restaurants and then Sunday evening playing with Smoke Break at a wedding for five hours. Good luck, Mike!

Back From Allakazam!

Well, I'm back! Max and I made a day trip to Mark and Nani Wilson's warehouse to pick up the Allakazam Hats. It was quite a site to see them all lined up in the entryway of their offices. Mark and Nani stayed up 'till the wee hours on Mother's Day by making sure all the Hats were signed and numbered by each of them. I must say how impressed I am in the finished product. Jay Leslie has gone above and beyond even my expectations on quality and craftsmanship. For those who pre-ordered, your wait is almost over as we will begin shipping the Allakazam Hats tomorrow (Friday). For those of you who are still interested, we have less than a few left with the original memorabilia package included, so hurry and place your order soon. So, last evening, I was asked to speak about Hocus Pocus to a group called Business Incubator, a Fresno-based business that showcased "Entrepreneur Unplugged Night." It was a casual event with about 25 to 30 businessmen and women interested in the growth, development, and success of local businesses. Of course, I couldn't just go up and talk the entire evening without performing a bit of magic, and since beer was being served, what better way to kick off the evening than by performing the famous Vanishing Beer Bottle trick! It got a great round of applause and enthusiasm from the audience, and the perfect icebreaker to begin my talk. I began at 5:45 PM and before I knew it, it was 7:00 PM. A great crowd with a fantastic Q & A. I really enjoyed myself.

We're still getting a lot of great response from the Aldo and Rachel Colombini Lecture last week. It was a great double-feature with both Aldo and Rachel performing and lecturing. Everyone got their money's worth as the lecture, which began at 7:00 PM didn't end until 10:30 PM. If these two fine lecturers come to your area, make sure you do everything in your power to go see them.

Ball Vases? OK, it's been brought to my attention that I may have a small problem. I have a ball vase fetish that just won't relinquish its hold on me. Wedding Bells

Writing the blog a day early as tomorrow I'll be heading north along with Betty and Max to visit my son, Cole at St. Mary's. School will be out in less than 3 weeks for him, and it will be time to move him out of his dorm. We're going to rent a mini storage so Cole won't have to move everything back to Fresno for the Summer months. Saturday night, we'll head to San Francisco for a nice dinner all together, and then it's back home on Sunday.

Last weekend was my niece, Sara's wedding. My sister Jan and her husband Chris did a fabulous job coordinating the entire affair. The hall was beautifully decorated, the food was fantastic, and the ceremony and entertainment afterwards were great. It was fun seeing my cousin, Brian, who I hadn't seen in several years and getting together with all my other relatives. I wish all the luck to the bride and groom, pictured below:

Special announcement: Speaking of wedding bells, my daughter, Renee, on Monday evening, gave us the good news: she and her boyfriend, Jonathan, are also getting married next April! Betty and I are, of course, very excited, and we couldn't be happier as Jonathan will be a welcome addition to the family!

Funny story about Jonathan: When Renee and he had been dating for several months, Jonathan asked Renee what her father did for a living. When Renee told him that I was in the magic business, he told her to wait a second, he went into the other room, and came back with a Scotch & Soda coin trick. Turns out that Jonathan has been doing magic as a hobby for years. Who'd have thought? Small world, indeed.

Birthday Wishes and Weddings

Quite the week here at Hocus Pocus. First of all, we all thought that the dreaded tax season would have the same slowing effect on our work here at Hocus Pocus. Such is not the case; perhaps the President's Economic Stimulus Package is working its magic because we've had our best month ever so far! We're running as fast as we can, and we thank you all for keeping us so busy!

This weekend, my sister's daughter, Sara, my niece, will be getting married this Saturday. In between packing and shipping, my sister has been fielding calls from bands, caterers, florists, etc., all while still managing to get your packages shipped to you on time. Quite the multi-tasker. We encouraged here to take this Thursday and Friday off to make sure everything is letter perfect come Saturday. The festivities begin tomorrow evening at 5:30 PM, and I am sure everything will come off as smooth as silk. Congratulations, Sara!

Tomorrow morning, Max and I head to Kingsburg, a little town approximately 25 miles south of Fresno, to attend a classic car show advertised as the largest in Central California. Max is very excited to attend and drool over classic cars from the past. He just got his 1969 Nova back from the upholsterers, and I must say, this is one hot looking car! He is now saving his money for the final investment, which will be a new paint job for the car's exterior. Once done, he'll be able to enter his car in a car show and rival some of his competition. This is his real love in life and what he wants to do, and he shows real passion about it, so of course, I am encouraging him all the way. He is now just weeks away, believe it or not, from getting his driver's license. Then watch out!

I'm really excited about a new product my friend, Chris Kenworthy, has just released: the Telethought Wallet! It has taken Chris over 2 years in the making, and when he first told me about it a couple of years ago, I couldn't wait for its release. Well, now it's here, and it is truly devious! When the finished product finally arrived here a couple of weeks ago and I had a chance to check it out, two words instantly came out of my mouth, which cannot be repeated here or in mixed company. A Night To Remember

Well, as promised, last weekend was better than even I could have imagined. Betty and I left for Los Angeles around noon on Saturday and arrived at the Beverly Hilton Hotel at 3:00 PM. We checked in and had a light lunch. Before you knew it, it was 6:00 PM, time to put on my tux, and Betty her evening gown and head downstairs. There were already several hundred magicians and celebrities in attendance walking the Red Carpet. After the meet & greet from 6-7 PM, there was a cocktail party hour, and it was amazing to see so many famous people in one place. Mark and Nani Wilson arrived close to 7:00 PM, and we all entered the ballroom and took our seats. Shortly after, the meal was served and then it was time for the awards banquet to begin. Opening the banquet were the Mums, a group of acrobats, jugglers, and mimes who circulated through the audience with their final destination: the stage. Lots of color, movement, and music started the evening off with a bang.

Mark Nelson then introduced Mark Wilson who announced the first award of the evening which, believe it or not, was the Award of Merit. It was a great honor to receive this award, but it was an even greater honor to have it presented by Mark Wilson:

After the Award of Merit presentation, I took my seat, still hard for me to believe I was even there. As the evening progressed, Bob Barker stood up and did 15 minuted of ad-lib, which was great. A pro of his caliber do his thing at 80+ years-old; he's still got it! He then introduced the MC of the evening: Mark Kornhauser, and then the various awards were handed out, including a Master's Fellowship to Patrick Page, Performing Fellowship to both Penn & Teller and Dr. Sawa of Japan, a Creative Fellowship to Steve Dushek, long-deserved Literary Fellowship to William Kalush, a Special Fellowship to the Amazing Johnathan, and Lifetime Achievement Award to Al Cohen. And then, of course, there were the other awards, this time presented with special wand created by John Gaughan and $1000.00 cash prize. Close-Up Magician of the Year went to Paul Green, Parlor Magician of the Year went to Shoot Ogawa, Lecturer of the Year went to Martin Lewis, Stage Magician of the Year went to Dana Daniels, and Magician of the Year went to Derren Brown. We were also treated to the hilarious commentary by Jason Alexander throughout the evening, Bob Zabrecky, Matt Plendl as Mr. Dead, an act you MUST see if you get the chance, Rocco, FISM Gold Cup Award-Winner Rick Merrill, who absolutely killed, the great Patrick Page, and Eric Buss performing his now-famous Spring Snake Symphony.

Watching Mark and Nani Wilson on TV, reading about all the Academy of Magical Arts Awards Banquets as a kid in Genii magazine -- not in my wildest dreams would I have ever believed I would have gotten this award and it be presented by Mark Wilson himself! It's Great To Be Back Again

So I'm back and almost fully recovered. This is the first sinus infection I've had in a while, and trust me, it's making up for lost time. After spending almost an entire day last Friday in the doctor's office under heavy duty antibiotics, I'm about 90% well. Thanks to those of you who wrote get-well emails and off-the-cuff medical advice. Special thanks to Mike for taking over last week and sharing a side of him that most people didn't know about... He appreciates all the nice emails and comments, and had no idea so many would find it of interest.

Got a nice note from Michael Grandinetti about his performance at Easter At The White House. Sounds like he had a great time and sent along this photo taken from the White House overlooking the south lawn towards the Washington Monument. According to Michael, there were over 22,000 people on the grounds for this event, and it was something he will never forget! Quite an accomplishment for this young and very talented magician.

My son, Max, returned from his trip from France, and brought with him several hundred photos, much to my wife's and my delight. He's given us a narrative travel log as he shared each of the photos with us. He had a great time. Of course, as soon as he got home, the first thing on his agenda was washing his car and gearing it up for some new upholstery. He's now almost completely restored the car with the exception of an outer paint job, and I must say, it does look pretty darned good! What I'm most proud of is that he's done it all on his own without any financial support from his mother and me. Last night, he found a 1970 El Camino online that he wants us to look at this evening. Why do I have this feeling we'll be adding yet another car to the Gross household? He loves cars as much as I love magic at his age, so who knows where this will take him? I'll update you on the El Camino next week.

I'm very happy that we are able to re-release Mike Giusti's Ring-A-Majig, one of our best-selling accessories for a borrowed ring routine! It has been unavailable for quite some time as the original manufacturer had to stop production on it. Luckily, Mike showed it to our own Tim Wisseman, creator of such effects as the Lie Detector TW3000, Remote Vision Color Cube, Remote Vision Die, and Mini Remote Vision Color Cube has made it even better and more durable than ever, and Mike has updated the instructions to comic book form with additional thoughts and extras! Imagine my surprise when I got a phone call from Mark Wilson last Wednesday telling me that I was going to be given the Magic Castle Award of Merit! Quite an unexpected surprise, to say the least! More exciting is the fact that Mark told me that he has arranged to present me the award himself! So, tomorrow morning, Betty and I head to Los Angeles to attend the 40th Annual Academy of Magical Arts Awards Banquet at the Beverly Hilton Hotel! This is a black tie affair where movie stars and some of the world's most famous magicians will attend. Quite the swanky affair, and I am very humbled, taken aback, and excited to be a part of this whole affair. Hope to update you will photos and daily details in next week's blog.

It's Not All About Magic

Hi, all. Mike Giusti here.

Well, allergy season has officially arrived, and Paul is down for the count. It hits him hard with a sinus infection each and every year, and everyone here at the shop should start taking bets as to when Paul will be out; it happens that regularly! Get well, Paul.

On the home front, we've been busier than ever here at Hocus Pocus. I've been putting on new products and categories like a madman, and thanks to my old pal, Mr. Caffeine, I'm able to keep up with it all. Barely. This week we had one of the most successful Estate and Private Collectible Sales ever! In fact, more and more people are contacting us to help them sell their older, unused merchandise, so look forward to seeing more of these lists in the future.

Personally, I couldn't be more busy. In an effort to try to simplify my life, I have done the exact opposite: March, April and May are now completely booked with both magic and music gigs. For those of you who don't know, I picked up piano at an early age and studied for a while until I found my first true love: bass. I can't quite explain it, but ever since I remember, I've always had an affinity for singing harmony to the point where I could sing lyrics of songs to the bass line. In other words, I could sing the lyrics, but the music coming out of my mouth would always be the bass line and or harmonies of the tune.

My first bass was an old German stand-up acoustic that was bigger than I was. In fact, I remember traveling with my college band and dreading the size of this instrument. You all know what I mean:

So I finally sold it as my college salad-eating days couldn't afford me the luxury of owning both a stand up and electric. I picked up my first electric bass and truly found my niche. It was an old red Hohner bass that was licensed by Steinberger, (I really wanted the Steinberger XL2 but couldn't afford at the time). After a couple of years, I sold the Hohner and got a great deal on the Steinberger XL2! You've all seen the Steinberger bass I'm talking about; everyone who paid attention to all the bands of the 80s and 90s saw it:

Made entirely of a graphite composite and all one piece, I loved that bass and used it all the way up until the mid-90s, when it got stolen! I was heartbroken. To make matters worse, Steinberger had stopped making these basses, and eBay wasn't around back then, so the basses were scarce. So I unhappily borrowed a friend's Fender Jazz bass and played with various bands all over California, scraping all my pennies together for my next purchase and, since I was living in Northern California at the time, I was able to talk to the incredible people at Alembic, based in Santa Rosa! To me, Alembic was always unobtainable; they are the Rolls Royce of bass makers, and their basses are not cheap. In fact, master bass virtuoso, Stanley Clarke uses them all the time for every one of his albums. It was there that I bought my first custom-made Series 1, which I still own to this day:

Such a work of art this bass is, with a neck-through-body construction and made of maple, exotic African Cocobolo wood, and my initials embedded in the neck with mother of pearl, this thing is not only gorgeous to look at, but it sounds SOOOOOO good, whether keeping the low end or soloing! It is, by far, my favorite bass, and the best sounding one I've ever owned. I use primarily for studio work, however, it's a bit on the heavy side, and I'm always afraid of dinging it, so I started looking for a more steady gigging instrument. I tried the Musicman Stingray, which I had always admired the sound that people like Peter Gabriel's bassist, Tony Levin and the Red Hot Chili Peppers' bassist, Flea got, so I put some jack down for one. Here, you can see it in the middle of my "studio":

Call it buyer's remorse, but almost immediately, I didn't like the feel of the Stingray. It only had 20 frets instead of the 24 I am used to, so soloing was extremely limited for me, so I looked into Musicman's other options and sold the Stingray for the 24 fretted instrument called the Bongo:

This bass felt a lot better, but its high end got lost with the rest of the instruments, so the search was on again for a gigging bass that sounded great, both in the low and high end. I came across someone who was selling a Pedulla 1988 MVP bass, and it caught my interest immediately; I remember seeing a great band in the Bay Area called WHaT, and the bassist/singer, Endre Tarczy, used it and I always thought it sounded great. Since I had gambled before with the other two basses, I decided to sell the Bongo and get the Pedulla. It has been with me ever since (in fact, it is the bass pictured at the very top of the blog). It gives me the tone I need without the weight of the Series 1, and I couldn't be happier with this bass.

Oh, and during my search for a good gigging bass, since I missed my old friend, the German acoustic stand-up bass, I decided to revisit history and look into Steinberger's new series of basses, and I was able to get a great deal on an NS CR Double Bass:

This bass weighs more than half of the old acoustic stand-up and sounds just as good, if not better, and is perfect for playing the smaller venues like clubs and coffee houses where jazz and blues are more appropriate. It even comes apart and fits into a single gig bag over the shoulder, quite unlike the stand-up.

Wow. If you've read this far so far, you deserve a standing ovation! I hadn't planned on this much information, but I am happy to say that my band, Smoke Break, is getting more popular by the day, and tonight, we are playing live at Club Milano in the Fulton Mall area of Fresno, and you can also see us at Club Salsa Monday, April 7th and again at Club Milano Saturday, April 19th.

Ah, The Good Ol' Days...

It's certainly no secret to any of you who know me how much I enjoy older antique magic. I attribute my early exposure to the late Marvin (Buma) Burger from San Francisco's old House of Magic. As a young man in my early teens, I remember the first piece of antique magic I ever bought from him, and I still have it to this day. Little did I know that this part of the magic world would become such a huge part of my life today... As my personal collection grows, I'm happy that I have a large enough space in which to display it. The history of our craft is most interesting to me, more than just books on tricks, I specifically enjoy historical and biographical books on the subject. Enter the recent Pleasant Nightmares Book by William Rauscher. This is just that -- a historical and biographical look at the career of Bill Neff. Neff was a master of the Spook Show, and his career spanned from the 1930s well into the 1960s. I found this book both extremely fascinating and hard to put down. Within two nights, I read the entire book and cannot recommend it highly enough. It is filled with great information and fantastic, vintage photographs.

The interesting coincidence is that I recently acquired several original Bill Neff comic books from the 1940s. Walter B Gibson was instrumental in bringing these to life starting in September, 1948 through February of 1953. I purchased these from the original purchaser, who bought them in his youth and kept them in immaculate condition -- as new as they day they came off the presses!

The Red Dragon issue is one of the rarest and sought after by both comic collectors and magicians. Below are the others, Ghostbreaker, published in September of 1948 and Racket Squad in February of 1953.

In addition to these comics, from the same collector, I acquired this extremely rare McElroy Talking Skull from 1937! The McElroy Brothers were well-renown ventriloquist figure makers, and their figures and craftsmanship so unique, they are sought after with vigor by collectors today. Any McElroy products are extremely rare, and I cannot tell you how excited I was to add this piece to my collection. Considering this skull is 71 years-old and in mint, perfect condition makes it an even more rare find! Included with the skull is the original manuscript, written by Lester Lake for the McElroy Brothers. Ah, the good ol' days. If there were only a time machine and we could go back again.

Greetings from Argentina!

Our good friend, Noberto Jansenson, came from Argentina, via Los Angeles to visit for a couple of days. We always enjoy Noberto's visits, almost as much as he enjoys our city of Fresno, which is quite different from that of Buenos Aires. While here, he told us about a recent television special that he has filmed in his home country that will feature interviews with the biggest and brightest stars coupled with his very own magic. This venture is completely different from what is typically presented in the evenings, and the television company has given Jansenson creative freedom from the interview questions to the type of magic he wishes to present. He is very excited about this new venture, and we are sure that it will be a huge success.

Tomorrow evening, my son, Max returns from his 2 week-long vacation from France. He's called Betty and me to report in, and it sounds like he's had a great time! His only complaint is that he wants us to take him to Burger King for a bacon cheeseburger and fries when he gets home.

The French Connection

Bonjour. OK, that's all the French you'll get outta me today. I started out the blog today as my youngest son, Max, left Wednesday on a trip to France! As part of a class trip, he'll be gone for a total of nine days where he'll be able to see such landmarks as the Arc de Triomphe, the Eiffel Tower, the Notre Dame Cathedral, the Louvre Museum, Chateau of Chenonceau, Palace of Versailles and then they will be off to Normandy to see the battleground of World War 2, not to mention the fine French food and other things. At 15 years of age, both Betty and I felt that this would be an incredible opportunity for Max. He's already phoned once and is having a great time. Betty purchased him a special memory card for his camera for plenty of pictures. He returns at midnight next Saturday, and I'm sure he'll have TONS of stories to share with us. In the meantime, he's left us explicit instructions on how to take care of the birds in the aviary, which I am following to a T, and of course, there's the car. He's left a list for his older brother, Cole, to start it up and drive it every day. No eating, drinking, etc. are allowed inside, however... He's even asked that Cole pick him up at the airport and drive him home in his Nova.
